The lives are often desperate and the characters inarticulate, but the group portrait is as grandly, sometimes as hilariously, realized as anything the director has ever done. Just like Carver's short stories, there is no real ending, which is a clever adaptation decision in my opinion. Some of the stories don't make a lot of sense and don't feel based in reality. We are never made to care much about the afflicted characters because Altman doesn't and thereby the stories carry very little weight. Whilst they go out to concerts and jazz clubs and even have their pools cleaned, they also lie, drink, and cheat. Sometimes it has the charm of The Player but ultimately the work is not cohesive enough. Featuring an all-star cast featuring a host of great character actors including Tim Robins, Julianne Moore, Jennifer Jason Leigh to name a few.The performances are wonderful without exception (even Andie McDowell does OK).
